Technically Somewhat Different

This may not be the best or "right way" to install MediaWiki on a sles 10 box but it worked for me.

I started off by installing a basic system and added the following packets

apache2
apache2-mod_auth_mysql
apache2-example-pages
apache2-mod_php5
apache2-prefork

php-xmlreader (without this i received a PHP Fatal error: Class 'DOMDocument' not found)(when going to the http://wiki_server_addrss/wiki url gave me a blank screen and that message in the apache2 log file)
php5-gd
php5-gettext
php5-ldap
php5-mysql

mysql
mysql-client
mysql-shared
When the installation finished i initialized the MySQL data directory and created the system tables with the mysql_install_db --user=mysql command (logged in as root on my freshly installed system)

Then i fired up yast and in the system services (runlevel) i activated the mysql and apache2 services.
After that had been done i set a password for the mysql root user like this
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'some_password' and
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h [host] password ' some_password'

Then i created the wikidb with this command /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root create wikidb -p which gave me a password prompt where i filled in the mysql root user password.
Then i'll checked if the database had been created by loging in to mysql with mysql -u root -p and got another password prompt where i filled in the mysql root password, i typed show databases; at the mysql prompt and saw that wikidb showed up.
I created a user called wikiuser and grant all privileges to the wikidb with GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON wikidb.* TO 'wikiuser'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'some_password' WITH GRANT OPTION; and GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON wikidb.* TO 'wikiuser'@'[HOST]' IDENTIFIED BY 'some_password' WITH GRANT OPTION;
then FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

When that was done i downloaded the tar.gz file and extracted it with tar xvzf [file] -C /srv/www/htdocs
and renamed it to wiki mv /srv/www/htdocs/[folder-name] /srv/www/htdocs/wiki
and changeed the permissions on the /srv/www/htdocs/wiki/config folder chmod a+w /srv/www/htdocs/wiki/config
I launched firefox on the server and went to http://localhost/wiki/config for the MediaWiki installation script, after filling in the form and the install went ok i copied the file /srv/www/htdocs/wiki/config/LocalSettings.php to /srv/www/htdocs/wiki location cp /srv/www/htdocs/www/wiki/LocalSettings.php /srv/www/htdocs/wiki
I finely made a change to the firewall to allow http traffic to be able to access the site.

Now i could access my newly installed wiki at http://server_adress/wiki :-)
